Dynamic Self-Defense Provides Practical, Modern Martial Arts Training For Adults

Through our 100% self-defense based curriculum, adults learn how to defend against real world attacks and common conflicts in a safe, friendly, family environment.

Dynamic Self-Defense is not your typical martial arts program.

We don't waste time with katas or forms that are interesting to watch but offer no value in a real conflict. We don't teach you how to win in the ring or make it to the Olympics. We don't practice ancient rituals.

We teach you how to survive a violent encounter.

Even when attackers come in groups... When they have a knife or gun... When you are caught off guard and find yourself face down on the ground... When there are no rules and no other options.

Dynamic Self-Defense takes the most practical self-defense techniques from other martial arts systems and integrates them into a proven, practical curriculum. Not to train star fighters. But to empower regular people in a family friendly environment.

Founded in 1998, Dynamic Self-Defense is a uniquely modern and American mixed martial art that takes the most practical parts of other martial arts and combines them into a single and effective curriculum. Co-founder and current head of Dynamic Self-Defense, Master Robert Lowery took his extensive training in Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, Tae Kwon-Do, Shotokan Karate and Choi Kwang-Do to create practical training programs for various law enforcement agencies, the FBI and military personnel, including army rangers.

Together, with other martial arts experts, Dynamic Self-Defense builds on a wealth of both technical and practical expertise. Unlike most traditional martial arts, nothing in Dynamic Self-Defense is locked in stone. Our curriculum continues to evolve as called for by different people and situations.

What you learn in Dynamic Self-Defense is effective. In fact the majority of the techniques taught are so effective that we have developed a unique training method similar to that used by elite military units to prevent injury. We don't allow free sparring and don't participate in tournaments because most of our techniques are not allowed--even in so called 'no holds barred' matches like UFC.

That said, Dynamic Self-Defense is a family organization. Our mission is to make the world a safer place, build personal confidence and fitness through a series of natural, easy-to-learn movements designed to allow individuals of any age or size to realistically defend themselves in any situation.

Some of what our students learn...

  • The principles of defense.
  • Awareness and avoidance techniques.
  • Effective blocking, punching and kicking.
  • Targets and weapons of the human body.
  • Close range combat, incl. throws and take-downs.
  • Defense against grabs, holds, head locks chokes and more.
  • Ground defense, incl. rape and weapons.
  • Defense against multiple attackers.
  • Defense against knife and pistol attack.

A workout that can save your life...

Training in Dynamic Self-Defense can save your life in more than one way! Learning self-defense is not just useful and fun, it's also a great cross-training workout. We mix cardio with strength training as part of our weekly schedule. We also provide a workout for your brain... as you learn to adapt and react to any conceivable defense situation.

It's important to point out that we're not talking about sport fighting taught by most traditional martial arts schools. The physical movement these schools do teach have been watered down for safety in sport competitions. There's a big difference between fighting and self-defense. In the first you can win or lose, in the latter you live or die. It also means you don't need to be an elite athlete in order to be effective.

Don't think you can do this?

Our training program works for people of all ages and levels of fitness because Dynamic Self-Defense is well... dynamic. Our focus is on empowering you in your everyday life. While fitness and strength is important in all martial arts, it's less important in a self-defense situation. Learning the right techniques and by using the situation you're in to your advantage, it's possible for anyone to defend against a much larger attacker.
