3 Undeniable Truths of Self Defense
Training Tips | Written By: Scott Mulhollen
There are many books, videos and classes that discuss Self Defense and ways to defend oneself against an attack. Below you will find three Undeniable Truths of Defense not normally thought about when pursuing instruction. Three truths one must come to grips with in order to successfully train in Self Defense.
1.
You will get hit: Where depends on you. When learning Defense most people do not put this thought process into their training regiment. Even blocking requires the body to attain physical contact with the opponent. But lets look at the attack that we do not see whether its coming from the same attacker we are fending off or from another attacker we do not see. Being able to defend those vital areas of the body like the ribs, face and stomach are crucial. Dynamic Self Defense works specific drills to help deal with multiple attacker situations involving proper body and arm placements as well as footwork. Keep in mind
the body can take hits and still be able to focus and retaliate. For instance if a strike hits the arm instead of the ribs, the affect of the victim will be different.
2.
Targeting: If you are unable to target specific parts of the body that will cause a negative reaction to your opponent, your wasting energy and techniques. Its not enough to just randomly throw out punches and kicks and hope one connects. Certain situations only allow one or two attacks to be administered before the victim has to face another opponent coming at them. Learn to focus solely on vulnerable points of the body to strike at for example the throat, eyes, groin and ribs. Remember you want that opponent to be non-responsive so there is not a risk of them coming back. Dynamic Self Defense utilizes specific drills allowing the student to visualize and effectively respond to those areas allowing them to improve quick response, speed and power.
3.
Underestimating The Opponent: When dealing with a potential threat many emotions run through a victims mind. More clearly is the thought of whether or not they are able to take the threat if it escalates into a physical confrontation. It's hard not to think about it when the situation presents itself. However one should
ALWAYS be cautious of any situation regardless if the opponent seems easy to defeat. When you feel you have the upper hand more times than not you will drop your guard allowing a potential opening of a vulnerable part of your body to be a target. By keeping a defensive mindset will help secure a positive outcome in your favor.
